by Shreya Pandit on Feb.17, 2012, under Uncategorized

After a long day of study,as I sit with a cup of strong coffee cradled in my hands…..nothing can be more relaxing to blog :)
Well the KDE update of the week being that I finally sat down and put my brains into the apostrophe bug in Calligra Words which has been now fixed! :)
Really satisfying to make contributions in whatever way possible to make Calligra bigger and better!
And yes,I have my exams next week onwards….

But as soon as they are over,I plan to add some nice features into the statistics docker….so stay tuned for the surprise!
Wishing a nice week to all devs and Calligra……good night :)

New improved Statistics Docker in Calligra Words :)

by Shreya Pandit on Feb.04, 2012, under Uncategorized

Hello all KDE and Words fans ;)

Sorry for being out of touch in recent times….i know i was not able to blog much…but the waits finally over!!
I have modified the Statistics Docker in Calligra Words so that the UI is now more user-customizable.Basically the old docker had a combobox with an auto-update button wherein you could choose only one kind of statistics out of Words/Sentences/Chars. With Spaces/Without spaces etc…But what about the use cases where we need two or more statistics to be tracked at the same time?Like if you are a newbie journalist and want to give in a centre-fold article within an hour’s deadline? It wouls be very, very inconvivient to just keep switching various options and see the word count. So all this fueled a detailed discussion between me and a few other Calligra and Words Developers at the Calligra fall Helsinki Sprint in Finland. The idea is:
1)To initially have all statistics being updated…but once the user wants to track only specific statistics,he/she can choose only those fields to be visible in the docker.
2)Bye-Bye to the autoupdate button…it has now been replaced by a QTimer that refreshes data every 20 ms or so…
3)KConfig saves user-customization and takes care each time the document is loaded…so you wont have to customize all over again.

So now thats that been smoothly done…i attach a few screenshots of the new UI and want suggestions and feedback from all the users/developers/communities…..all improvements are welcome as the ultimate Goal is user-satisifiability and about feeling good when you use any software .And thanks to all Words devs especially Boemann for helping me out with this :)

New Improved UI

The code can be found in my branch words-statistics-shreya….and bye for now guys…am really sleepy :)
But I promise more news from my side in the KDE World soon…!!

Desktop Summit 2011….#wow :D

by Shreya Pandit on Aug.12, 2011, under Uncategorized

Hello Kde-ers….. :D

As I sit relaxing in the lounge of City Hostel Berlin and fondly remnisce the week that has gone by…..I actually cannot believe that I came to Berlin and attended the second Desktop Summit. It has been an awesome experience, meeting the community that has welcomed me with so much warmth…..especially the Calligra team. There were loads of discussions everyday, numerous suggestions on how to make my work better,ah well in short a lot of food for thought that inspired me to tighten the reigns over the project and put in the best I can.And yes…..I presented my work at the lightning talk sessions for KDE and GNOME students on the very first day….yippie!! :D

I also met Jaroslaw Staniek..my mentor….and we hacked together…that was an enlightening experience too :)

So now I am all ready to fly back to India…taking back with me colourful memories of this trip…..and then working to finish my SoK project before it’s final deadline..So that’s all from shreya till now…..see you!!

by Shreya Pandit on Jul.18, 2011, under Uncategorized

Hey planet!! :)

A very warm hello to the entire KDE community! This is my very first post on planet..among the many firsts this year…..this also happens to be the lucky year when I started contributing to KDE.A big, lovely thank you to the awesome community which welcomed me with open arms!Well you would be wondering how I came to be associated with KDE?It’s through the Season Of KDE this year, where my project is to develop a web Browser Widget for Kexi Forms Kexi reports and Calligra Words. My mentor is Mr. Jaroslaw Staniek, who has wonderfully guided me through my difficulties :D
And there is more good news in store as I write this post…..The first stage of my project is already functional!!(I am including a screenshot of the same ;) ).

And the link to the video:

As my mentor blogged about it a few days ago,the web browser widget for forms offers the basic functionalities.I am now in the process of refining it and finalizing the code for the reports implementation.Hopefully, there should be running results by the end of this week :)
I am really excited about going to the Desktop Summit too….it will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our KDE-in people, interact with the KDE family, and of course a pleasure to meet up with the Kexi Folks(Jaroslaw Staniek,Adam Pigg and everyone else).

Thats all for now…..I’ll be back with more updates on the Web-widget soon….till then happy KDE-ing!

Shreya PanditHi all KDE and Kexi people!!

A very big thanks to the entire KDE and Kexi community and of course my mentor,Jaroslaw Staniek for choosing me as one of the students working under the umbrella of Season Of KDE 2011
My project is developing a web browser widget for Kexi Forms,Kexi reports and Calligra words(Project Details here) which would allow the user to have a smooth web navigation experience with the functionalities that they expect from any browser and lots more.

I have familiarized myself with the internal code of Kexi,Qt Webkit API and documentation.Currently I  am under way in finalising the code for the same and will soon put up the first implmentation here.My blog will keep you updated about the project progress, tune in here to see how close you are to making  your Kexi project more interactive!!

Cheers and loads of smiles

Shreya Pandit
